General Summary
This position is responsible for preparing drawings, specifications, and sketches using CAD workstations, appropriate design criteria, and technical manuals often working closely with engineers to coordinate designs. The incumbent integrates management skills with expert technical knowledge and understanding of the business to identify technical requirements. He/she applies highest level of technical skills gained through extensive experience on a broad range of projects, and anticipates complex technical issues and identifies resources internal or external to the team who can resolve the issue(s). This position identifies opportunities to improve on the technical standards and specifications around which others operate, and serves primarily as the technical supervisor for a designated subject area or project.

Completed technical work is given to senior management for review and approval before presenting to the client. The Civil/Structural Engineer should be aware that the design process includes visiting clients’ facilities and performing physical work such as walking, standing, climbing ladders and lifting.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Under general supervision, evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Assignments are generally well defined.
  • Takes responsibility for their portion of the discipline’s scope, schedule and budget and delegates accordingly to junior staff. Continued demonstration of reliability and accountability for own work products. Meets or exceeds deliverable deadlines.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD.
  • Evaluate the scope of work using P&ID's and specifications to design instrumentation systems while adhering to plant design standards.
  • Display a good working knowledge of industry standard drafting practices, good technical aptitude and general knowledge of engineering.
  • Has good communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment.
  • Working knowledge of ISA 84 Instrumented Safety and NFPA 70 NEC.
  • Designer may lead a team on an assigned area or phase of a project and may be required to conduct field investigation trips to operating plants.
  • Coaches designers preparing systems sketches and drawings; collects document specifications based on appropriate engineering criteria and technical manuals. Work conforms to applicable codes and standards as well as company policies and procedures.
  • Provides technical oversight for all levels of designers to help develop overall staffing needs.
  • Produce work-hour estimates.
  • Produce schedule input for work assignments.
  • Ability to check 3D models and 2D CAD drawings as needed.
  • Participates and champions internal and external project reviews.
  • Attends project meeting and takes on active role to help team resolve concerns and solve problems across all disciplines.

Key Qualifications (Education, Experience & Certifications):
  • Technical School Degree in Design or Drafting
  • Strong knowledge of AutoCAD
  • 15-20 years of instrumentation design experience within the chemical process industry


Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
  • Ability to travel as this position will require individuals to be onsite with customers.
  • Willingness to work in hazardous environments while onsite with customers.
  • Ability/Willingness to climb to elevated platforms via plant stairs and ladders at client sites.
